In this group project, we observed that marginalized groups were an often ignored user base for home improvement and home repair companies. We believed there was an opportunity to make their unique challenges more approachable through a mobile app with accessible instructional content.

Over the course of eight days, we researched, designed, tested, and presented a mid-fidelity mobile app that would take on the opportunity to help users feel empowered, informed, and safe.

We also realized that we were solving the wrong problem after user interviews. Pivot!

Research

Objectives

  1. What does research process and decision-making look like when hiring a person to do home repairs?
  2. How do users currently interact with service people when they are doing their home repairs?
  3. Why specifically do they feel unsafe when someone is in their home, what are they afraid of and how do they currently solve this issue?

User interviews

Interviewee A (F, 28, renter)

“I called maintenance to have it fixed. They told me I was crazy. They supposedly came in and fixed it but it’s still there.”

Interviewee B (F, 26, renter)

“I looked into it myself to see like what I can do because I thought it seemed fun. My building said ‘no, we’ll have somebody come by and do it.’”

Interviewee C (F, 24, owner)

“He explained a lot of it to me, which made it like easier for me to see he’s not just trying to take my money.”

Interviewee D (F, 71, owner)

“I have a girlfriend. She has absolutely no clue. And she’ll call me all the time. ‘I had water in my basement. What do I do?’ ”
